| COOL ROOFING
What Is A
Cool Roof?
Traditional roof materials stay
"hot", absorbing 70% or more of the solar energy striking them. Cool
roofs absorb less than 35% of this solar energy, staying 50-60 degrees cooler
during peak summer conditions than traditional dark roof materials.
Benefits Of
Cool Roofing:
Save
Money:
- Save an average of 20% on cooling costs --
your actual savings will depend on variables such as number of stories,
insulation level in roof, building configuration, number and placement of
windows, and size of cooling equipment. Your savings may exceed 20%!
- Increase comfort levels in buildings without
air conditioning.
- Save on roofing costs. A maintenance coating
can usually be applied over your existing roof system, eliminating the cost of
tear-off and disposal of the old roof system. Also, because temperature
extremes can contribute to the degradation of roofing materials, cool roofs can
lower roof repair and maintenance costs.
- Save on HVAC equipment costs. If your building
uses less cooling energy, your cooling equipment runs less often and lasts
longer.
- Coating may be fully deductible as a building
maintenance cost instead of a capital expense, which must be depreciated over
time.
- May be eligible for rebate from California
Energy Commission and/or your local energy provider ($0.15 per square foot or
higher.)
Save The
Planet:
- Reduce air pollution. In metropolitan areas,
dark roof systems increase the "heat island effect", which results in
temperature increases. The higher the temperature the more quickly smog is
formed by the chemical reaction between nitrogen oxides (NOx) and volatile
organic compounds (VOC's). Studies of Los Angeles and Sacramento have shown
that higher urban temperatures due to the heat island effect are responsible
for a surprising amount of smog formation.
- Reduce roofing waste to landfills. Over the
last 40 years, 7 to 10% of landfill space used has been filled with roofing
waste.
